Guild Battlegrounds (GBG / GG) is the central PvP mode and the source of Battle Coins, building fragments and combat advantages throughout the game. Your guild fights on a battlefield map against 4–7 other guilds for sectors — and those who truly understand the system extract significantly more rewards from every season than the average player.
This guide explains from the ground up: how the tile system works, what Attrition means and why it is the most important mechanic, how to build an advantage for your entire guild through Siege Camps & Fortresses — and which unwritten etiquette rules prevent guild wars.
1. The Basics: Map, Provinces, Sectors
A GBG season lasts 14 days: 5–8 guilds from the same league are paired into a battle. The battle itself runs for 11 days, followed by 3 days of downtime (collecting rewards, league re-ranking). Two map variants alternate — the Volcano Archipelago and the Waterfall Archipelago.
Each guild starts at the map edge with its own Starting Province, which serves as an untakeable anchor point. The map is divided into Provinces, each consisting of hex Sectors. You can only attack sectors that border your own territory.
Starting Province / HQ: The Starting Province has one build slot reserved exclusively for the powerful Battle Field Camp (details in Section 3). Normal sector buildings cannot be built there. The HQ serves as an untakeable anchor point — without a connection to the HQ, a guild cannot launch new attacks.
The Tile System: How a Sector Is Captured
Tap a sector and choose between two actions:
- Attack/Defend – with troops (red/blue combat power counts)
- Negotiate – with goods
Each successful encounter earns the guild Advances: one battle = 1 Advance, one negotiation = 2 Advances. Whoever reaches the required number first captures the sector — other guilds lose half of their progress invested there (rounded up). The required Advance value per province scales with the league:
| League | Waterfall Archipelago | Volcano Archipelago |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | 20 | 20 |
| Silver | 35 | 35 |
| Gold | 50 | 50 |
| Platinum | 65 | 65 |
| Diamond | 100 | 110 |
Important rule: A captured province is unattackable for 4 hours. If you don't use this time for expansion (see Section 3), you waste Victory Points.
Victory Points (VP)
Each held province generates VP hourly — and central sectors yield significantly more than edge sectors. The leaderboard is decided solely by VP and resets to 0 per battle. Therefore: capture sectors as close to the top of the hour as possible, since VP settlement runs hourly.
2. Attrition – The Most Important Mechanic in GBG
Attrition is a personal debuff that increases by exactly 1 level with each successful encounter (battle or negotiation) — from level 0 up to a maximum of level 150. It resets to 0 daily at midnight (server time).
With each individual level, two things continuously increase:
- The combat values of enemy units (up to an extreme 41,325 % bonus at level 150)
- The amount of goods demanded in negotiations (up to 405 goods per slot at level 150)
Important: Attrition increases the quantity of goods demanded, but not the number of different good types. How complex a negotiation becomes (how many different goods are available) is primarily controlled by your Trial Level (see below).
Tip: If you still have low attrition just before midnight, make use of it — the nightly reset sets everything back to 0. Organized guilds spread their actions throughout the day and prioritize the most valuable sectors for the hours with the best building protection coverage.
The Trial System (since August 2025)
Each player chooses their personal trial level (1 to 50) completely independent of the guild. It can be changed daily and takes effect from midnight for the entire following day:
| Parameter | Level 1 | Level 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy army boost | Base value | × 4.0 |
| Enemy critical hit chance | 0 % | 50 % |
| Negotiation cost multiplier | × 1.0 | × 4.0 |
| Leaderboard points multiplier | × 1.0 | × 7.0 |
The higher the level, the more Battle Coins per encounter — but also significantly harder fights already from attrition 0.
Choosing the Optimal Trial Level
Your "attrition limit" is the level at which your troops die in auto-battle. If your limit is at attrition 60, you should not choose a trial level higher than 25–30.
| Combat Power (Att/Def) | Time Investment & Style | Recommended Level |
|---|---|---|
| Under 500 % / Beginner | Little time, manual combat | 1–5 (focus on Silver Coins) |
| 500 % – 1,500 % / Solid | Active daily, lots of auto-battle | 10–20 (moderate Gold Coins) |
| Over 2,000 % / Endgame | High activity, top troops | 30–50 (maximum Platinum Coins) |
Three golden rules:
- Test your attrition limit: Find out at which attrition level your troops die in auto-battle. Choose a correspondingly lower trial level.
- Factor: Combat Volume: Fewer battles possible → choose a higher level. Whether you have little time, overpowered guilds dominate the field and almost everything is locked, or your guild is so strong (or opponents so passive) that there's barely anything to conquer for the active members — the effect is the same: With low combat volume, a higher level yields significantly more coins per battle, and you exhaust your attrition budget faster at a higher yield.
- Coin Requirements: If you want the best reward buildings in the Championship Shop, you must work your way up to higher trial levels — only those reliably drop Platinum Coins.
3. Siege Camps & Fortresses – The Guild Advantage
In captured provinces, the guild can build buildings — paid exclusively from the Guild Treasury. Therefore, everyone with building rights should know exactly what they are building, to avoid unnecessarily draining the treasury.
| Building | Effect | Build Slot |
|---|---|---|
| Watchtower | 8 % chance to avoid attrition (cheapest option) | Normal Sector |
| Barracks | 20–60 % attrition reduction + 5–30 % reduction of enemy progress | Normal Sector |
| Battle Station (Command Post) | +15 / +30 / +60 Victory Points per hour | Normal Sector |
| Decoy | 15 % chance that attackers suffer double attrition | Normal Sector |
| Traps | 45 % chance that attackers suffer double attrition | Normal Sector |
| Battle Field Camp | 26–80 % attrition reduction + 25–100 % VP bonus (global) | Exclusively Starting Province/HQ |
Global Cap: Regardless of the number of overlapping buildings, the combined attrition reduction is strictly capped at 80 %. Every encounter therefore always has at least a 20 % chance to increase your attrition by 1 level. On average, your attrition increases by one point every ~5 battles at full build-out.
Why This Matters So Much
A fully built-out sector with Command Posts and Barracks reduces the attrition chance for all guild members fighting in adjacent sectors by up to 80 %. At the same time, the buildings massively increase Victory Points. This means: The guild can fight longer and cheaper than opponents without expansion.
Tactical note: Buildings generate no VP during construction time. Therefore capture sectors early and expand immediately, rather than postponing the build-out. In Diamond League it is often worth using Diamonds to shorten construction time — whether you do that is a matter of opinion (casuals won't invest Diamonds).
The Checkerboard Tactic (Co-op)
The most well-known and lucrative strategy in organized leagues: Two dominant guilds alternate sectors like a checkerboard.
- Staking: Guild A attacks a sector from Guild B and fights it to just before the limit (e.g., 95 of 100 Advances). The sector is "frozen" — not fully captured.
- Swap: As soon as the 4-hour sector protection expires, Guild B captures the prepared sector with a single battle.
- Repeat: The freshly captured sector is immediately besieged again by Guild A up to just before the maximum. After the lock expires, it changes hands again.
Through targeted building in surrounding sectors, the attrition chance is reduced to 20 % (the global minimum). The two guilds can thus complete thousands of battles daily and generate enormous amounts of Battle Coins — while smaller guilds are pushed to the map edge by the seamless pattern.
Important: Since the 80 % attrition cap, infinite attrition-free farming is no longer possible. The tactic today is more of a "controlled sector swapping" to get the most out of daily attrition budgets.
4. GBG Etiquette – Unwritten Rules
GBG is a team game, but the map is worked by multiple guilds simultaneously. This leads to unwritten rules whose violation quickly triggers guild wars:
Building Traps = Declaration of War
Deliberately building Traps (45 % chance of double attrition for attackers) is widely understood as a declaration of war. Even when guilds do not cooperate with each other, the iron rule applies: Never build traps. Whoever does anyway destroys the attrition efficiency of others and may get focused by all other guilds and pushed back to their own HQ.
"Leaving Flags Standing" (Pinning) in Co-op
This means a guild attacks an enemy sector but deliberately does not fully capture it, stopping just before the limit (e.g., at 95 of 100 Advances). The "flag stands" on that sector and strategically blocks it for other guilds.
In a co-op context: Only when the partner gives the signal (e.g., because a neighboring field's sector protection expires) is the sector captured with the last few battles ("broken"). Whoever breaks a flag without asking or too early violates the agreement.
The Golden Rules
- Coordination is everything – The guild lead determines the main attack direction, no solo actions without coordination.
- Capture at the top of the hour – VP settlement runs hourly; missed hours are lost points.
- Work from inside out – Prioritize middle sectors, strategically leave anchors in place.
- Maintain connection to HQ – A cut-off captured sector remains in your possession and continues to generate VP, but you cannot launch new attacks from there. A cut-off progress flag (not yet captured) is completely deleted — the progress is lost.
5. Rewards – What You Get Out of It
Battle Coins (permanent, with storage limit)
Per battle or negotiation you receive coins in three tiers:
| Coin | Rarity | Use | Storage Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver Coins | every encounter | → Battle Season Shop | 200,000 |
| Gold Coins | higher trial levels | → Championship Shop | 200,000 |
| Platinum Coins | very high levels (30+) | → Championship Shop (main buildings) | 300,000 |
Coins are not reset between seasons but are subject to a storage limit. The higher the trial level, the more and higher-quality coins you receive (level 50 yields approximately ×6 Gold Coins and ×20 Platinum Coins compared to level 1).
The Two Shops
- Battle Season Shop (Silver): Resets every 14 days. Offers Diamonds, FP, goods, units and building kits. Since September 2026, purchase limits for Diamonds, FP and goods have been removed (unlimited).
- Championship Shop (Gold + Platinum): Resets only with a new Championship (4× per year). Offers a permanent catalog of all main and secondary reward buildings from all previous championships. Older buildings are offered with increasing discounts (up to 50 %).
Guild Rewards by Placement
- Prestige (temporary, depending on league and placement)
- Guild Power (permanent; scales with league — e.g., Diamond League 1st place: ~546,000)
- Building Fragments, map-dependent: Statue of Honor (Volcano Archipelago) or Great Elephant (Waterfall Archipelago), plus exclusive chain buildings for Diamond/Platinum
Diamond League Top 3: Additionally fragments for the Tower of Champions selection kit and the Tournament Grounds (a time-limited building with massive combat bonuses).
Note: To receive season rewards, you must have been a member of the guild continuously from the beginning to the end of the round.
TL;DR
GBG is won as a coordinated guild, not solo. The three levers are: expand buildings early and deliver consistent performance throughout the day (provinces hold 4 hours of protection, then capture new ones — otherwise you get pushed to the map edge), choose your trial level realistically for your own combat power, and respect the unwritten etiquette rules (no building traps, honor flag stops in co-op). The rewards (coins, fragments, Guild Power) are permanent and scale with league and placement.
