FoE Quantum Incursions (QI): The Complete Guide – Map, Town & Guild

Quantum Incursions (QI) are a cooperative PvE map system in Forge of Empires. Your guild works together against NPC waves on an isometric map, collects quantum pass points and unlocks powerful rewards. Since the switch to the Medieval Era setting (Oct 2, 2025), the system has fundamentally changed – this guide explains the flow and mechanics so you know what happens where.

1. The QI Map – Topology & Node Types

The map is a network of nodes connected by lines. Your guild starts at a common starting point (orange flag) and works its way forward from there. A node only becomes available once at least one connected predecessor node has been completed – you can move in any direction where a line leads.

The map is built with mirror symmetry: the red (attacker) path and the blue (defender) path are mirror images of each other, with the central donation path running along the axis of symmetry between them. Each day brings a new, slightly varied map – sometimes you start top-left, sometimes bottom-right – but the pattern stays the same.

There are 12 difficulties. The active tier changes automatically every midnight (server time) to the next one – regardless of whether the boss was defeated or not. This means: each day has its own map and tier, and on the last day of the run the highest difficulty is active.

Node Types

The background color of a node tells you which side it belongs to: dark blue = defense army (blue values), dark red/brown = attack army (red values), beige/light = donations. The icon determines the specific type:

TypeIconRequirementNote

🛡️ LieutenantKnight with closed helmStronger battle, red or blueAppears in the side paths
👑 BossLarger knight with open helmFinal bossBlue = Defender Boss, Red = Attacker Boss
🏰 StrongholdFort on shieldBuffs both central bosses while it standsTake the fortress first, then attack the boss – otherwise the fight is significantly harder
💰 Donation NodeCoin pile + crossed tools or goods stackDonate goods, coins or supplies – no battleAlternating goods and supplies/coins
🔘 GarrisonRound shieldBattle node (red or blue) – grants a buff for the entire guildBuff only lasts for the current daily map, resets with the new map at midnight

Quantum Pass Points & Farming Nodes

Every successful interaction with a node rewards fixed Quantum Pass Points (PP) – the amount depends on the difficulty (higher tiers give more PP per action). The collected PP determine which rewards your guild unlocks at the end of the season.

Farming Nodes: Once both bosses are defeated, an additional three Farming Nodes become available (Attack, Defense, Resource Donation). These have a high capacity and allow you to collect pass points even after the bosses. In practice they're an optional extra for strong guilds – whether and when they open depends on how quickly your guild takes down both bosses.

2. Red vs. Blue Values – How They Work & Where Permanent Boni Come From

On the QI map, only your respective QI army counts. Your normal combat bonuses from your capital city do not apply here.

How the Values Are Built Up

Your red and blue combat values on the QI map are made up of:

  1. The temporary Quantum Settlement (the biggest lever – see section 3)
  2. Permanent sources in your capital city (see below)

Completed Cultural Settlements (Polynesia, Vikings/Yggdrasil, Japanese/Shinto Temple)Fixed red or blue QI combat valuesMain building + Ambassador slots in the Town Hall

Forgotten TempleMassive QI value boostGEx Tier 5 reward, expires after 28 days
Tourney GroundsQI combat bonusesFrom Guild Battlegrounds (GBG), expires after 14 days

3. The Quantum Settlement – Medieval Era Setup

The Quantum Settlement is a separate settlement within the QI system. Since the Middle Ages update, three important rules apply:

  • No roads. Every building works without infrastructure connection as soon as it's placed anywhere on the grid.
  • Chrono Alloy (CA) is the core resource for higher building tiers (Tier 2 & 3). Tier-1 buildings don't need CA.
  • The three historical Medieval Eras (Early/High/Late) have been merged into one setting – you can mix buildings from all three eras.

Chrono Alloy

New temporary currency, produced by Settlement Hall, residential and production buildings. Higher tiers cost more CA – this is the main bottleneck for expansion.

Beginner Starting Layout

A simple setup that requires 0 Diamonds and 0 Quantum Shards – you use the unupgraded starting area:

CategoryBuildingsPurpose
🏡 Residential3x Multistorey Houses + 3x Estate Houses (2×2)Enough for the entire starting economy with buffer
⛪ Cultural5x Churches (3×3), as a compact blockProduce Quantum Actions; enough to make the population ecstatic, for +50% bonus from buildings
⚒️ Production4x Breweries (3×3) + 5x Tanneries (3×3)Solid supply base for the start
QI starting layout: Yellow = Castle/HQ, Green = Residential, Blue = Churches, Purple = Production
QI starting layout: Yellow = Castle/HQ, Green = Residential, Blue = Churches, Purple = Production
Important: Keep an eye on Enthusiasm – if it drops too low, you lose the harvest bonus and produce less than possible.

Upgrade path (once Chrono Alloy is available):

  • Multistorey Houses → Frame House → Clapboard House (more citizens and Coins per space)
  • Tanneries (3×3) → Alchemists (3×2, better resource production on a smaller space)
  • Churches → Pillories (stronger Chrono bonus and more Enthusiasm per space)
  • Ropery → buy plot expansions for further expansion and goods donations
Initially you can fight losslessly with 8 Catapults and donate the surplus of your available goods/resources, but later you'll need combat power boosters.

You won't be a top player with this setup – but it's enough to familiarize yourself with the individual elements without a big investment and not be completely useless.

4. Units & Auto-Battle Tactics

The 5 Unit Types in Medieval Era QI

ClassTypeRole in Battle
MercenaryLight UnitCounters cavalry, solid damage absorption
Heavy CavalryFast UnitBridges the field, good against artillery
Mounted ArcherRanged UnitDamage at range
Armored InfantryHeavy UnitHigh armor, but usually not the best choice
CatapultArtilleryEnormous range, shoots enemies down before they arrive
Higher building tiers unlock upgrades – mechanically it stays exactly these 5 base classes.

Auto-Battle Formations

Enemy FormationYour Best FormationNote
Mostly foot soldiers & ranged units8x CatapultsExtremely lossless, standard setup
More than 2 mounted units4x Mercenary + 4x CatapultsPrevents artillery from being overrun
Mixed formations2x Mercenary + 6x CatapultsSafest all-round casual approach

5. Combat Value Focus

The map is split into red and blue nodes. If your red or blue combat value is significantly stronger, focus on the corresponding side – this minimizes unit losses since your advantage pushes through faster.

6. Rewards – Quantum Shop, Lunar Coins & Chests

Guild Prestige & Championship

A Championship lasts for multiple seasons (Incursions). At the end, the QI leaderboard is evaluated – your placement grants your guild prestige bonuses and you receive exclusive fragments for Championship buildings. Leaderboard rewards have been paid out after each individual Incursion since the 4th Championship, not just at the end of the Championship.

Lunar Coins & Quantum Shop

The core of the current reward system: Node rewards give no fragments anymore, but Lunar Coins. This permanent currency (cap: 200,000) carries over seasons and Championships – similar to GBG Coins.

With Lunar Coins you can selectively buy the fragments you need in the Quantum Shop. The shop is accessible directly from the QI HUD before the next season starts. Older Championship buildings are available at reduced prices there. Quantum Medals can also be spent in the shop.

Specific prices and available buildings change every Championship – check the current InnoGames support article for your respective season for details.

End-of-Incursion Reward Chests

At the end of each Incursion (season) there are up to 10 chest tiers, depending on the total guild progress – not your personal input. Every successful node interaction by all members counts towards this. The more PP the guild collects overall, the better the content of the highest unlocked chest.

Quantum Pass

The Quantum Pass is a separate championship reward system: By completing nodes you generate progress points, with which you unlock milestones on a reward track (free lane + premium lane). Pass milestones also give Lunar Coins and fragments.

Action Points (Quantum Actions)

  • Maximum storage limit: 200,000 Quantum Actions
  • Regeneration: 5,000/h
  • Additional actions can be purchased with Quantum Shards – the price increases per purchase within a season and does not reset daily

7. Casual Approach – Little Time, Big Yield

Thanks to the 200k action cap, the system also rewards players who only check in twice a day:

  1. 2-minute rhythm: Log in morning and evening → harvest QI Settlement, start new productions
  2. Use auto-battle: No manual chess-playing needed – the formations from section 4 are enough for the beginning
  3. Farming Nodes (optional): If your guild takes down both bosses early, three Farming Nodes are still available – you can collect extra PP there. Not mandatory, but a nice bonus for strong guilds.
  4. Collect Lunar Coins: Don't spend in the shop during the week → buy strategically before the season and Championship end

TL;DR

QI is a cooperative PvE system on an isometric map with mirror-symmetric layout (attacker/defender side + central donation path). 12 difficulties change automatically every midnight – each day has its own map. The Quantum Settlement in the Medieval Era works without roads, uses Chrono Alloy for higher tiers and offers buildings from three eras to mix. Rewards come through Lunar Coins (permanent currency → Quantum Shop), end-of-season chests (based on total guild progress) and the Quantum Pass. Casuals get almost maximum value with twice-daily logins thanks to the 200k action cap, auto-battle and Farming Nodes.
